Exciting news! My painting is the cover for the upcoming Debut novel by Sam Sussman!

My Nana

My Nana
My Mom is one of those women with the mystical ability to connect with small children and babies. We call her the baby whisperer. She has the innate ability to sense what little ones are feeling and meet them exactly where they are. Pure love with no ego. I am sure this ability is what made her one the greatest elementary school teachers around.
I have always known she is the baby whisperer but when I had my son I got to witness her talent first hand.  Witnessing this connection made me want to I create the painting “My Nana” in an attempt to capture that pure love between a boy and his Nana. So you can imagine how excited I was when Penguin Random House Publishing reached out to me to obtain my permission to license the image of my painting on the cover of the highly anticipated debut novel by Sam Sussman!

Sam grew up in the Hudson Valley with his lovely mother. His writing has been recognized by BAFTA and published in Harpers Magazine. Following his mother’s death he found a way to process that immense grief through writing about her and from those stories his book “The Boy From the North Country” emerged. Sam writes about one of the most tender and intimate mother son relationships of our era.
When Sam and I spoke he made it clear that he and I share the same adoration for our mothers and he feels his mother’s spirit is in my painting. Guys!!! I cannot properly express how fabulous it feels when someone tells you they connect with your creation! I am over the moon that my work of art will be associated with such a beautiful story and author.
The cherry on top of all of this is Sam is going to join me on November 7th at Muse & Co Fine Art in Marietta Georgia where I will be the featured artist and he will be signing books and talking with you about his new novel!! Here is a link from the New York Times about Sam’s book!

Cotton and Backroads

"Cotton" a 48x48 oil painting is one in a series of works I am doing from old family photographs. The painting  is of my mom when she was a small child right at the end of World War II. You can see her cute little dress which was made by my Grandmother. She is in  a cotton field, and a poor one at that, smiling into the sun. Can you feel the sun, the happiness of a child?

My family has it's roots in the rural south. I have had the privilage of getting a taste of that world when I would visit my grandparents . Unfortunately, in today's world of Honey Boo Boo and as my cousin Zach, who is a fantastic blue grass musician , puts it, "that modern day country backroad anthem crap." ( If one is a bluegrass or country music fan, we are use to more poetic lyrics.) Anyway, my point is I believe the essence of the rural south is being overshadowed by silliness and parody. My quest with this body of work  is to represent what I  see in the people I grew up with and still know: a quiet confidence, strength and grace.

My mother and father are the embodiment of "quiet grace". They, like my husband's parents, my grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., are all well educated , and have the ability to look past what they see in front of them and find what is good about most people and situations. They  have a quiet confidence about who they are and have no need to compete to feel that sense of confidence. Maybe  it is because they have seen so many who are in such a sad place and their perspective of the world is grounded.  Hopefully, these qualities passed on to me through osmosis!

I want to capture that subtle feeling of strength and grace  in my paintings - those moments when time stops and you can feel what is really happening. Of course, my main goal is to develop this "quiet grace"  in my own life, so maybe through these paintings, I will.
